One of the key factors that contribute to the exceptional quality of the Balearic Islands’ waters is the presence of Posidonia oceanica, an endemic Mediterranean marine plant. Posidonia meadows play a crucial role in sediment dynamics, produce oxygen, absorb carbon, provide habitat and shelter for a variety of species, and effectively filter and maintain the water’s cleanliness. For these reasons, Posidonia meadows are considered the most important habitat in the Mediterranean and the hallmark of a thriving marine ecosystem in the Balearic Islands.
