A private island rental means booking an entire island for the exclusive use of your group, with no other guests, staff intrusions, or shared beaches to negotiate.
It sounds like a fantasy reserved for the ultra-wealthy, but it is a booking category that operates today across dozens of destinations, with real weekly rates and standard reservation processes.
This piece covers what those weekly costs actually look like, how the booking process works from inquiry to arrival, and the logistics involved in getting a group to a remote island and keeping them comfortable there.
It also looks at who these rentals genuinely suit, from milestone celebrations to multi-family trips, so you can gauge whether the private island model fits your plans better than a single large villa.
Yes, you can rent a whole private island, and it is a standard booking category, not a special favor arranged for celebrities.
The short answer
Renting an entire private island is a real, bookable travel category available across regions like the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific.
Weekly rates vary widely by island size, staffing, and region, and pricing is typically quoted per week rather than per night.
A field report from a guest who booked a full private island stay put total spend at roughly $11,000 for a week, covering sea-view lodging with food and most beverages included.
That figure lines up with how these rentals are generally structured: one all-in weekly rate rather than a per-room hotel model.
What a weekly rate typically covers
A private island rental rate is built to include far more than just the land itself.
Most quotes bundle staff (chefs, housekeepers, and boat crew), full meals, and exclusive use of the entire island for your group.
Beverages are commonly included too, though premium wine, top-shelf liquor, or specialty imports are frequent exceptions billed separately.
Exclusive use is the core of the rental model: no other guests, no shared common areas, and the island effectively becomes a private world for the length of the stay.

Private Islands You Can Rent
Insider Villas books two of Sir Richard Branson’s private islands directly, Necker Island and The Beach Estate on Moskito Island, alongside island-scale retreats in Panama and Anguilla. Very few agencies hold direct access at this level.
One family or a small group of friends who want beach-led privacy at villa scale
From-rates are published starting prices and shift with season and group size; final pricing is confirmed on inquiry for specific dates.
Private island rentals span a wide range of setups, from single-villa islands suited to a couple’s milestone trip to multi-building compounds built for large groups or retreats.
Location matters as much as the island itself: some properties place guests steps from the main gathering areas, while others require a golf-cart or boat ride to reach the water’s edge or communal spaces.
Not every accommodation type on a given island includes a private pool, so groups prioritizing that feature should confirm it before booking rather than assuming it is standard.
Rental terms also vary by property, including minimum night counts and which days of the week a stay can begin, which affects how easily a trip fits into a fixed travel window.
The British Virgin Islands, Panama’s Caribbean coast, and Anguilla are where Insider Villas books these stays directly, with the Caribbean broadly the heart of the category.
The all-inclusive island model means the entire island, its staff, and its services are reserved exclusively for one group, with a dedicated team managing the stay from arrival to departure.
On-island staff typically includes private chefs, housekeeping, and a concierge presence that coordinates everything once guests land, from meal planning to activity scheduling.
This model tends to suit groups who want a fully hands-off experience, where the resort-style comforts of a managed property come without needing to share them with anyone outside the group.
Beverage service can vary within this all-inclusive structure: some setups include wine with certain meals but carve out reserve bottles or premium spirits as separate add-ons.
Standard villa plus full-service concierge
The standard villa plus concierge model means booking a single high-end villa rather than an entire island, then layering on dedicated concierge support as needed.
This approach works for travelers who want an island rental’s exclusivity for their own accommodation without paying for whole-island staffing they may not fully use.
Insider Villas publishes this add-on at one fixed price, quoted the same way for every villa:
“The concierge is one fixed add-on — €1,500 a week for the team to run the whole stay, jet coordination included — so there’s nothing to price up beyond the villa itself.”
The Full-Service Concierge covers pre-arrival trip design and bookings, a dedicated concierge available up to 12 hours a day throughout the stay, private chefs, transfers, and private jet coordination, scaled to a single villa rather than an entire island.
Booking a private island rental follows a clear sequence: shortlist and check dates, confirm the property’s specific stay rules, then lock in a custom quote before you commit.
1
Shortlist islands and target dates
Narrow your search to islands that match your group size and preferred region, then flag two or three date windows you could travel. Check each listing for available date ranges before reaching out, since inventory on individual islands can book out for the exact week you want.
Watch for: peak-season weeks and major holidays, which sell out furthest in advance.
2
Check the island’s booking rhythm
Every island sets its own minimum stay and allowed start days, and these rules are not interchangeable across properties. Necker Island runs on a 7-night minimum with Saturday starts, while The Beach Estate on Moskito Island takes 4-night stays beginning on any day of the week.
Watch for: a property’s minimum-night requirement and fixed start day, since booking around the wrong assumption can delay confirmation.
3
Request and confirm your custom quote
Submit your dates, group size, and any special requests to get a tailored quote for the island you are looking at. A specialist typically responds within 24 hours to confirm availability and finalize pricing.
Watch for: quotes that bundle staff and meals versus those that price them separately, so you can compare islands accurately.
Step 1: Choose your island and dates
Choosing your island and dates starts with matching group size and region to what is actually available for your travel window.
Cross-check flexible date ranges against each island’s calendar early, since the islands with the most demand tend to have the shortest list of open weeks.
Step 2: Understand each island’s booking rhythm
Understanding booking rhythm means learning that minimum-stay length and allowed arrival days differ from one island to the next.
Necker Island books in 7-night blocks starting on a Saturday, in line with the Saturday-to-Saturday standard most luxury villa rentals follow.
The Beach Estate on Moskito Island is one of the few exceptions: a 4-night minimum with stays starting on any day, which makes it far easier to fit into a fixed travel window.
Confirming this detail before you fall in love with a specific island prevents a mismatch between your available travel dates and that property’s rules.
Step 3: Confirm with a custom quote
Confirming your booking means submitting a request and receiving a tailored quote back, typically within 24 hours.
The quote stage is where staffing, meals, and any add-ons get itemized so you know exactly what the weekly rate includes before you commit funds.
Reaching a private island typically involves a multi-leg journey: a flight to the nearest mainland or regional airport, then a transfer by boat, yacht, or helicopter to the island itself.
The final leg rarely delivers guests straight from the airport to the front door.
Most arrivals involve landing at a regional hub, then connecting to the island by private boat or motor yacht, with some properties also equipped for helicopter access.
For the BVI islands, private jets land at Beef Island (EIS) or St. Thomas (STT); Moskito Island is 30 minutes from Tortola by private boat, and Necker’s transfers run from Virgin Gorda or Beef Island, with the island’s own helicopter pad for direct arrivals.
Transfer speed and comfort can vary based on which route you take to close that last stretch of water, and a quick private boat transfer tends to feel far more seamless than a longer water-taxi ride.
Arrival itself is often kept deliberately understated, with a small dock and a short staff greeting rather than a large terminal-style welcome, which reinforces the sense of stepping into a private world rather than a public resort.
Guests planning their own travel should also expect that on-island movement afterward may depend on terrain, since some accommodations sit uphill from the main gathering areas and are reached by buggy rather than a flat walk.
For groups that want to remove the guesswork, private jet arrangements and yacht charter can typically be coordinated alongside the island booking itself; jet coordination already sits inside the Full-Service Concierge, so the whole chain is booked as one arrangement.
Confirming your access route and transfer timing before you travel helps avoid the kind of last-leg friction that can otherwise overshadow an otherwise smooth trip.
Two Ways onto Necker Island
Getting onto Necker Island comes down to two booking paths: hiring the island exclusively, or booking individual rooms during select Celebration Weeks.
Exclusive hire gives your group the entire island, up to 48 adults and 6 children across 24 rooms, with no other guests present. It is the format for weddings, milestone birthdays, and multigenerational gatherings.
Celebration Weeks work differently: on select dates through the year, guests book individual rooms or come as a small group and share the island with the other travelers staying that week.
That second path answers the objection most people raise, that surely you cannot rent Richard Branson’s island. For a Celebration Week room, you can, at a fraction of the exclusive-hire rate.
Branson built Necker as his family’s home, and it still runs that way, with the Bunkroom at the Great House, treasure hunts, and lemur feedings alongside the beaches and water sports. The island also runs on renewable energy and hosts conservation programmes for endangered species.
Who a Private Island Getaway Suits Best
Necker Island
A private island getaway suits two distinct kinds of travelers best: large groups who need room to spread out together, and couples who want total seclusion for a milestone trip.
Large groups, weddings and retreats
Large groups get the most value from a private island rental because the whole-island model scales naturally with headcount.
Multi-family trips, corporate retreats, and destination weddings all benefit from having every guest under one roof, or across a cluster of villas, without needing to book multiple separate properties.
Islands with higher sleeping capacity and multiple accommodation buildings tend to fit this segment best, since they can host a wedding party or a retreat group without anyone feeling squeezed.
The exclusive-use structure also matters here: a wedding or corporate event benefits from having the entire property closed to outside guests, so the schedule, noise, and privacy stay entirely in the group’s control.
Couples and milestone escapes
Couples and milestone travelers are best matched to smaller private island properties built around quiet and seclusion rather than group activities.
An anniversary or honeymoon trip tends to favor the intimacy of a single-villa island over a larger, multi-building property designed for a crowd.
The vacation experience on these smaller islands typically leans toward a calm, disconnected pace, with limited nightlife and a deliberate lack of late-night entertainment.
This makes them a strong fit for couples looking to unplug together, though it also means the setup may suit adult travelers more than families with young children, given the quieter, less activity-driven atmosphere.
Start Planning Your Private Island Stay
The right private island rental comes down to matching scale to occasion: larger multi-villa islands for weddings and retreats, smaller single-villa islands for couples and milestone escapes.
Once you know which category fits your group, the next step is simple: reach out with your dates and headcount to start a custom-quote conversation, with a response typically back within 24 hours.
From there, you can compare options directly by browsing our private islands.
Whether you are planning a full-island buyout or a single standout property, the goal is the same: book with a clear picture of what is included, so the experience matches the trip you actually pictured.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to rent a private island?
Published from-rates in the Insider Villas portfolio start at €43,896 for 7 nights on Necker Island, rising to €151,510 in high season, while The Beach Estate on Moskito Island starts at €213,500 per week.
Rates are quoted per week rather than per night, and on the Branson islands the figure is all-inclusive: meals, drinks, watersports, and airport boat transfers are in the rate.
Smaller island-scale properties like El Otro Lado in Panama and Shiloh Villa Estate in Anguilla are quoted on inquiry, so an accurate number means requesting a quote for specific dates and group size.
Can you rent a private island for a week?
Yes, a week-long stay is the standard booking length for most private island rentals, and many properties are actually structured around a fixed weekly rhythm rather than nightly increments.
Necker Island is the classic example, with a 7-night minimum and Saturday starts, while The Beach Estate allows 4-night stays beginning on any day.
Confirming the exact booking rhythm for the island you want is worth doing early, since it affects how you plan travel dates around the trip.
What are the most expensive private islands to rent?
The Beach Estate on Moskito Island sits at the top of the Insider Villas portfolio, from €213,500 per week and reaching €306,600 in high season for 22 guests across three villas.
Necker Island’s exclusive hire reaches €151,510 in high season, and the gap between the two shows how staffing, villa count, and capacity drive the rate more than fame does.
Season moves the number substantially on both, so the same island can command a very different price in peak weeks versus quieter months; our guide to the most expensive Caribbean islands covers the wider market.
Are private island getaways good for couples?
Yes, private island getaways can be an excellent fit for couples, particularly smaller single-villa islands built around quiet and seclusion rather than group activity.
These properties tend to favor a calm, disconnected pace with limited nightlife, which suits an anniversary or honeymoon trip better than a larger island designed for weddings or retreats.
Couples should also confirm what is actually included, since not every villa on every island comes with its own pool, and larger shared pools are not a given across properties.
What is included in an all-inclusive island rental?
An all-inclusive island rental typically covers the entire island, on-site staff, and a private chef, all coordinated by a concierge team once guests arrive.
Meals are generally included as part of the package, though beverage service can vary, with standard house wine sometimes included at lunch while reserve wines or premium spirits are billed separately.
Because inclusions differ by property, it is worth confirming exactly what is bundled into the rate before comparing two islands on price alone.
How do you get to a private island rental?
Getting to a private island rental usually involves flying into a regional airport or mainland hub, then transferring by private boat, motor yacht, or helicopter for the final leg.
Few islands offer a direct door-to-door drop-off, so most trips include at least one connection between the airport and the island’s dock.
Private jet arrangements and yacht charter can often be coordinated alongside the booking itself, which helps simplify that last stretch of travel for guests who want a smoother arrival.

Olivier was absolutely fantastic — he consistently went above and beyond to ensure our holiday was exceptional. The only minor disappointment was that, upon arrival, the villa didn’t feel fully prepared for check-in, which we later learned was due to the condition it had been left in by the previous guest. That said, we completely understand these things can happen, and Olivier handled the situation swiftly and professionally, rectifying everything within 24 hours.

Fantastic experience with Emilio and the Insider Villas team in Mallorca. The villa was exceptional, and they organised all our activities throughout the week and did a brilliant job. And when a different company messed up, they went above and beyond to fix even though it wasn’t their fault. Would give them 6 stars if I could! Highly recommend!
