Both Megève and Courchevel regularly top the best winter escapes in Europe lists, thanks to their beauty and world-renowned skiing. But before we compare each in detail, it’s worth understanding what each ski destination offers.

Megève

Megève is in France’s Rhone-Alpes region, known for its old-world charm. Since the 1920s, Megève has been a go-to destination for skiing enthusiasts, and it was initially introduced as an affordable alternative to Swiss ski destinations.

You’ll notice that Megève has a slow pace of life, with plenty of skiing, luxury shops, and a quaint village feel.

Courchevel

Courchevel is located in the popular Three Valleys ski area, and it’s a popular destination for skiers of all levels, thanks to a massive network of interconnected pistes. The area has four separate villages, with each offering a unique charm.

Most would agree Courchevel stays are more modern, offering the perfect combination of adventure and glamour.

Family ski holidays should offer something for everyone, and finding the perfect destination can be challenging. Children usually need beginner slopes, while adults often want to test their skills on the more advanced slopes.

Luckily, Megève and Courchevel have a variety of slopes for skiers of all levels.

Skiing in Megève

Megève has an impressive 325 km ski area, set across three mountains. The most popular area is Mont d’Arbois, which offers gentle slopes for beginners. Most easy slopes also link back to the village, enabling novice skiers to take regular breaks.

Intermediate skiers can enjoy the leisurely runs of Le Jaillet, while advanced skiers can head to the Mont Joly area for more challenging descents. While Megève isn’t known for its advanced slopes, families will find plenty of areas perfect for honing their skills.

Skiing in Courchevel

The Three Valleys is the world’s largest linked ski area, featuring multiple terrain types. Children and beginners can enjoy the ZEN zones at Courchevel 1650, which are gentle, sheltered runs, while intermediates can choose between blue and red runs.

Where Courchevel really shines is its advanced slopes for skiers who want to challenge themselves. With a range of black runs, including Jean Blanc, Grand Couloir, and Jockeys, it’s impossible for advanced skiers to get bored.

Childcare Options and Ski Schools

Ski schools are important considerations when planning a family ski trip, as they allow adults to enjoy more advanced slopes. As with most large resorts, Megève and Courchevel have excellent ski schools.

Megève Ski Schools

Megève offers private schools, including Evolution 2 and SkiPros, with English-speaking instructors and small class sizes.

You can also use ESF Megève, a ski school for children aged three and over. The school prioritises confidence-building and fun, making it an excellent choice for younger children.

Courchevel Ski Schools

Courchevel is a large resort, and families can take advantage of numerous ski schools, including ESF Courchevel, which offers classes for children over three.

Older children and teenagers will love the Supreme Ski & Snowboard School, which has English-speaking instructors and offers group or private lessons.

Other Family Activities

Ski resorts aren’t just about hitting the slopes every day, and many destinations offer plenty of non-skiing activities for families.

If you have younger children, choosing a destination that provides other entertainment is essential, and both Megève and Courchevel deliver.

Non-Skiing Activities in Megève:

  • Dog Sledding: Nothing quite beats the thrill of dog sledding; families can book epic adventures in the area.
  • Snowshoeing: If you have young children or are inexperienced skiers, snowshoeing lets you experience stunning scenery at a much slower pace.
  • Luge Rides: Megève offers luge experiences for people of all ages, including laid-back pony luges for children and adrenaline-pumping runs for thrill seekers.
  • Ice Skating: The Palais des Sports offers traditional ice skating and other activities during peak winter season.
  • Relaxation: Adults can enjoy spa and wellness experiences or head to the nearby villages for shopping.

Non-Skiing Activities in Courchevel:

  • Aquamotion: Families love Aquamotion because it includes a spa, wellness facilities, and activities for children. Trying the indoor surfing experience is a must.
  • Toboggan Runs: The Moriond Luge Adventure features a 3 km run, where families can race each other.
  • Snowshoeing: If you’re looking for a more relaxed activity, snowshoeing is an excellent alternative to skiing.
  • Ice Skating: The area also has plenty of ice rinks, including indoor and outdoor skating.
  • Luxury Shopping: No trip to Courchevel would be complete without experiencing the luxury shops at the 1850 resort.

Accommodation

Accommodation is another key consideration when planning a family ski trip. While both Megève and Courchevel offer hotels, opting for a private chalet lets you combine privacy and luxury, without sacrificing convenience.

Olivier was absolutely fantastic — he consistently went above and beyond to ensure our holiday was exceptional. The only minor disappointment was that, upon arrival, the villa didn’t feel fully prepared for check-in, which we later learned was due to the condition it had been left in by the previous guest. That said, we completely understand these things can happen, and Olivier handled the situation swiftly and professionally, rectifying everything within 24 hours.
