What Does Dubrovnik Feel Like?

Bustling, historic, and atmospheric. Dubrovnik works best when structure and history are central to your stay. This is where the crowds gather, but it’s central to the Dubrovnik experience.

Step outside of Pile and Old Town, and Dubrovnik becomes slower. Think scenic walks, lazy beach days, and boat trips.

Dubrovnik Highlights and Experiences

Dubrovnik is particularly suited to travelers who value history and natural beauty.

How you choose to experience the city depends on your travel group’s preferred pace, but these are Dubrovnik’s highlights:

  • The City Walls: Walk the medieval City Walls for panoramic views of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea.
  • Culture and History: Dubrovnik’s Old Town is home to Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and Dubrovnik Cathedral. This is where you’ll go to experience the city’s unique history and architecture.
  • Island Boat Trips: The Elaphiti Islands and Lokrum offer a peaceful side of Dubrovnik. Expect exotic beaches, unspoilt nature, and traditional Dalmatian cuisine.
  • Pelješac Peninsula: A must-do for wine enthusiasts, and best arranged privately with local access. Tour vineyards in the area, sample a variety of wines, and discover hidden coves only the locals know about.
  • Cable Car Rides: A cable car ride to Mount Srd gives you access to the city’s best views.

Staying in a Luxury Villa in Dubrovnik

While Dubrovnik has plenty of hotels, a luxury private villa lets you relax, unwind, and set your own pace.

When days get busy, and you want tranquility, a private villa serves as your base. Looking for space for everyone? Choose a coastal property like Villa Molunat.

Hvar in a Nutshell

Bay Villa

People visit Hvar for its island lifestyle. Idyllic beaches, warm weather, and a thriving social scene make Hvar particularly lively in the summer months.

Its nightlife often takes center stage, but there are plenty of spots to slow down and enjoy a more chilled-out vacation.

What Does Hvar Feel Like?

Hvar combines cosmopolitan living with island vibes. Think beach clubs, luxury yachts, modern resorts, and elegant restaurants. But step away from Hvar Town, and you’ll see a different side to the island.

Sprawling lavender fields, vineyards, and olive groves give couples and families space to breathe and connect, and there’s always an opportunity to find a quiet spot on the beach.

Towns like Jelsa and Stari Grad preserve traditional Dalmatian culture.

  • Couples and honeymooners
  • Friends travelling together
  • Beach and boat-focused travellers
  • Villa guests wanting space and flexibility

Hvar Highlights and Experiences

It’s easy to think Hvar’s main charm is its nightlife and beaches, but families and those seeking a more tranquil experience will find plenty of activities:

  • Hvar Town: In the evening, Hvar Town comes to life with bars and nightclubs. But visit during the day, and you’ll find abundant history and culture. Stroll through the marble streets and visit historic sites, such as the Cathedral of St Stephen.
  • Traditional Experiences: The UNESCO-listed Stari Grad is one of Europe’s oldest towns. Enjoy wine tasting, unspoilt nature, and authentic Dalmatian cuisine.
  • Pakleni Islands: Just a short boat ride from Hvar, the Pakleni Islands offer gorgeous beaches, snorkelling, and upscale beach clubs.
  • Vineyard Tours: Whether you’re a white wine enthusiast or red wine connoisseur, Hvar is one of the best locations to sample locally produced wines.
  • Nature: Hvar is famous for its nature. Book a private tour of the lavender fields and inland villages and enjoy the region’s most scenic views.

Staying in a Luxury Villa

Hvar is full of luxury resorts, but choosing a private villa lets you live like a local. Luxury villas on the island combine resort-service levels with total privacy.

Staying in Hvar Town immerses you in the vibrant nightlife, while coastal and countryside retreats are ideal for guests who prefer to set their own rhythm.

If the beach is where you feel most at home, the ultra-modern Bay Villa offers unspoilt Adriatic views, five spacious bedrooms, a spacious heated pool, and seamless beach access.

Dubrovnik vs Hvar: Which Suits Your Travel Style?

When it comes to Dubrovnik vs Hvar, there’s no best here. They’re both fantastic options. It depends on your travel style. Are you looking for history and culture? Or, would you prefer to take it easy?

Your answers define whether Dubrovnik or Hvar best suits your group’s preferred flow.

  • Couples and Honeymoons: Seeking romantic dinners, culture, and scenic boat trips? Choose Dubrovnik. Prefer long beach days, sunset swims, and private boat days? Hvar gives you a romantic beach break.
  • Friends and Nightlife: While Dubrovnik has sophisticated bars and wine lounges, Hvar is where friends go for bustling nightlife.
  • Families With Kids: Hvar’s beach lifestyle is ideal for relaxation, but combining the history and culture of Dubrovnik with downtime in a private villa often works better for families.
  • History and Culture: If history and culture are top of your agenda, then it’s all about Dubrovnik. The city is simply unrivalled in terms of its architecture and cultural sites.
  • Food, Wine, and Relaxed Luxury: Both Dubrovnik and Hvar offer authentic Dalmatian dining, villas with private chefs, and family-friendly dining.

Dubrovnik vs Hvar: The Practicalities

Dubrovnik and Hvar both feel special from the moment you arrive. But the month you travel changes everything from how you use your days to where you stay.

When to Go:

  • May and October: The shoulder months are when Croatia feels authentic. It’s less busy, the temperatures are manageable, and there’s less pressure to plan every move. Whether you choose Dubrovnik or Hvar, traveling during these months feels effortless.
  • June: The sweet spot for summer vibes without peak-season intensity. Dubrovnik is busy, but manageable when you’re smart with timing. Hvar is vibrant and accessible, without tourist chaos.
  • July and August: Peak season in Dubrovnik and Hvar is all about hot weather and high energy. Planning is key during the summer, but a private villa stay can give you some downtime.
  • September and October: The weather’s still warm, and Dubrovnik feels easier. September in Hvar is about lazy beach days, finding hidden coves, and relaxing. It’s our favorite time for romantic trips and laid-back beach vibes.

Price Levels and Value

Both Dubrovnik and Hvar are premium destinations, but they “spend” differently.

Accommodation

Peak season stays command the highest rates, while choosing the shoulder seasons offers more space, better locations, and flexible villa stays. October in Dubrovnik provides the best value for money, but be prepared to trade in sunshine.

Dining

Restaurant pricing is similar, but how you eat changes the overall feel. Dubrovnik’s Old Town will naturally draw you in, with Michelin-starred restaurants and family-friendly eateries.

Hvar has diverse restaurants, and waterfront high dining is a must.

Activities and Extras

This is where Hvar can add up. Life here revolves around the sea and island hopping. Boat days are a necessity for discovering the best swimming, nearby islands, and hidden coves.

Private boat trips become an option in Dubrovnik, with the city’s rhythm offering accessible activities within walking or driving distance.

Insider Tip: If you choose Hvar, plan for at least one boat day, or choose a villa with direct sea access so you are not constantly booking excursions.

Crowds and Cruise Ships

Cruise season can change the feel of Dubrovnik. The old town is hectic and fast-paced, as visitors funnel into the city for short day trips. Is the impact noticeable? Yes. Is it manageable? With some planning.

If you visit Dubrovnik in the summer, planning is everything. Keep early mornings and late afternoons open for history and culture. That’s when the area is quietest.

And, choose a private villa where you’re away from the crowds. Villa Reed gives you access to Dubrovnik while still offering plenty of quiet time.

Hvar

Hvar is easier to navigate during peak season, as most congestion is around Hvar Town and its most popular beach clubs. If you stay in a coastal or countryside villa, the island can still feel peaceful, even in the summer.

Getting There and Getting Around

Dubrovnik is simple and direct. Hvar is an island base that requires a little more planning.

Getting to Dubrovnik

Fly into Dubrovnik airport, then transfer to your accommodation. If you choose a private villa, we’ll arrange high-end airport transfers.

Once you’re in Dubrovnik, you can explore the Old Town on foot. Private chauffeurs, car rentals, and boats let you experience everything the city has to offer.

Getting to Hvar

Most visitors fly to Split, then take a ferry to Stari Grad, a 1-hour 40-minute journey. Total transfer time depends on where you stay.

It’s easy to get around Hvar Town, and your concierge can arrange private transfers from your villa. But boat trips are a big part of island life.

Travelling Between Dubrovnik and Hvar

Planning to experience both in one trip? This is where high-speed catamarans become essential. Typical journey times between Hvar and Dubrovnik are 3.5 hours.

Ferry schedules vary by season, but your concierge can help you find the best travel options for your group.

Can You Visit Both Dubrovnik and Hvar on One Trip?

If you have the time and you want to experience the best of Croatia, combine island and city life.

A five-day trip makes sense if you want to enjoy fast-paced Dubrovnik, then wind down with two relaxing days in Hvar.

Staying for 7-10 days gives you more flexibility for island hopping. Begin in Split, relax in Hvar, then finish with Dubrovnik.

FAQs

Is Hvar more expensive than Dubrovnik?

The prices are similar in peak season, but Hvar can offer better value. However, if you choose Dubrovnik, the shoulder seasons are more affordable.

Is Dubrovnik too crowded in summer?

Without planning? Yes. But when you choose early morning or late afternoon tours, you’ll have more space to breathe.

Choosing a private villa gives you the opportunity to enjoy tranquility, while Dubrovnik’s beaches and rural areas are quieter in the summer.

Can you do Hvar as a day trip from Dubrovnik?

Realistically, no. They’re too far apart. If you want to combine both, three days in Dubrovnik and two days in Hvar are a good mix.

Olivier was absolutely fantastic — he consistently went above and beyond to ensure our holiday was exceptional. The only minor disappointment was that, upon arrival, the villa didn’t feel fully prepared for check-in, which we later learned was due to the condition it had been left in by the previous guest. That said, we completely understand these things can happen, and Olivier handled the situation swiftly and professionally, rectifying everything within 24 hours.
