Dubrovnik rewards curiosity. Each area feels distinctly different. Step inside the Old Town walls and you’re in the heart of Medieval history.

Along the coast, life slows down. Sea views, space, luxury private villas, and time to breathe.

Elsewhere, modern resorts offer a polished and structured experience.

Choosing among the best places to stay in Dubrovnik depends on who you’re traveling with, how long you plan to stay, and the pace you want to set.

In this guide, we’ll break it down clearly, with practical insights, an insider’s perspective.

How to Choose Your Base in Dubrovnik (3 Simple Questions)

Best Places to Stay in Dubrovnik, Croatia

default

Before choosing where to stay in Dubrovnik, ask yourself three simple questions. Your answers will shape how the city feels for you.

1: How Many Nights Are You Staying?

  • 2–3 nights: Stay central. Old Town, Pile, or Ploče immerse you in Dubrovnik’s unique culture and ensure you don’t miss a thing.
  • 4–5 nights: Combine sightseeing with downtime. Ploče or Lapad both work well.
  • 7+ nights: Give yourself space to roam and a place to relax. Villas in Lapad, Ploče, Gruž, or other nearby coastal towns let you set your own rhythm.

2: Do You Prefer Beach Time, History, or Both?

Dubrovnik works because it doesn’t force you to choose between culture and coast.  You get to decide whether you’re all about seeing the sights, want to unwind on a beach, or would like a combination of both.

The Old Town, Pile or Ploče, is a history lover’s dream, while Babin Kuk and Lapad offer hypnotic coastal views. If you want to combine both, we recommend that Ploče offers the best compromise.

3: Will You Have a Car (and How Do You Feel About Stairs)?

Dubrovnik is built on hills. Its most beautiful areas often come with slopes, steps, and limited parking. If you have a hire car or private chauffeur, opting for areas like Cavtat, Lapad, and Gruž are simpler than Old Town.

Olivier was absolutely fantastic — he consistently went above and beyond to ensure our holiday was exceptional. The only minor disappointment was that, upon arrival, the villa didn’t feel fully prepared for check-in, which we later learned was due to the condition it had been left in by the previous guest. That said, we completely understand these things can happen, and Olivier handled the situation swiftly and professionally, rectifying everything within 24 hours.
