  1. Start at Tel Aviv: Book a tour from Tel Aviv to Petra with Insider Villas, and receive the best and most visual experience.
  2. The back door: This one-way hike from back to front took us about 3.5 hours, including a scenic 45-minute trek through the mountains. We descended the 800 steps to the Monastery, avoiding the strenuous climb and the need to retrace our steps. Be sure to take the Little Petra shuttle and a 4×4 Jeep to the back door entrance.
  3. Best upper view of the Treasury: After exiting the Siq, head to the right for the best vantage point. We hired a local guide for JD 10 per person to help us with a short 10-minute climb, resulting in expert photos. It’s totally worth it. Avoid the long hike past the Tombs to a similar viewpoint.
  4. Rent a donkey! You will love it, your siblings will thank you for it, and it is just the thing to do when visiting this wondrous place. Plus, it serves as a great safety net in case your 4×4 breaks down (it happens).

The best time to visit: For ideal temperatures and less tourists, we recommend traveling to Petra during the months of March-May and the fall months of September-November.
